Split Payments

Register a sale across two or more payment methods or amounts using the Pay button.

A single cart can have any number of payment registrations. A common scenario is a customer paying part by card and the remainder in cash, or splitting a large purchase across two cards. Each payment is registered separately using the Pay button, and the cart tracks the remaining balance between payments.

How split payments work

There is no separate "split payment" mode. Instead, you use the Pay button as many times as needed, entering a different amount or payment method each time. The cart calculates the remaining balance after each registered payment and pre-fills the amount field on the next registration.

Cash payments — tender and change

When cash is chosen as the payment method, the payment dialog runs a two-step tender-and-change flow instead of a plain amount entry.

Step 1 — Enter amount received

A numeric keypad appears. Quick-tender buttons for common denominations (100, 200, 500, 1000 for NOK; equivalent for SEK, DKK, EUR, USD) are shown as coloured chips. Tap a chip or type an amount manually. For a split where cash covers only part of the total, enter the partial cash amount.

Tap Confirm to advance.

Step 2 — Change

The settlement screen shows the change amount owed (large, centre-screen), with a suggested denomination breakdown (bills as rectangles, coins as circles) for the exact notes and coins to hand back. Open the drawer and return the change. Once the drawer closes the screen advances automatically and the cash amount is recorded.

If the customer pays the exact amount, a checkmark is shown instead of a change amount.

Card payments — terminal

When a card-based method is chosen, the app connects to the Nets Baxi bridge and shows the Terminal Payment screen. The customer completes the transaction on the physical terminal, and the result is recorded on the cart automatically. See Checkout with Payment Terminal for the full terminal flow.

Gift card or credit note

When a gift card or credit note is one of the payment methods, tap the Gift card / Credit note tile in the payment dialog. The dedicated code-entry screen opens, shows the available balance, and applies only what is needed — it will never charge more than the remaining amount due on the cart.

If the gift card balance is less than the remaining total, the app applies the full card balance and returns to the cart with a partial payment recorded. The cashier then taps Pay again to register the remainder with another method.

See Paying with a Gift Card or Credit Note for the complete gift card flow.

Registering the first payment

  1. Open the cart panel and review the total.
  2. Tap Pay at the bottom of the cart panel.
  3. Select a payment method from the list.
  4. For cash: follow the tender-and-change steps above. For card: complete the transaction on the terminal. For other methods: change the Amount if registering a partial payment and optionally add a Comment, then tap Add Payment.
  5. A Payment added successfully notification confirms the registration. The modal closes and the cart refreshes.

After the first partial payment, the cart panel shows an orange banner:

Partially Paid: [paid] paid, [remaining] remaining

The Pay button stays active in orange, indicating that payment is still outstanding.

Registering additional payments

  1. Tap Pay again.
  2. The modal opens on the Payments tab, showing the payment already registered.
  3. Tap the Add Payment tab.
  4. Select a payment method for the next payment. This can be the same method or a different one.
  5. Complete the flow for the chosen method (tender-and-change for cash, terminal for card, or amount entry for other methods).

Repeat this process until the remaining balance reaches zero.

Reviewing all registered payments

At any point, tap Pay and switch to the Payments tab to see all payments registered against the cart.

Each payment shows:

ElementDescription
Payment method nameThe method used (e.g. Card, Cash)
AmountThe registered amount and currency
Status badgeCurrent payment status (Paid, Pending, Failed)
DateDate and time of registration
Transaction IDShown if available

When a single payment method has multiple transactions (for example, an authorisation followed by a capture), they are grouped into a collapsible card. Tap the card to expand and see each transaction individually.

Fully paid state

When the remaining balance reaches zero:

  • The Pay button turns grey and its label changes to Paid.
  • No partial payment banner is shown.
  • The Order button becomes the active (accent-coloured) action — tap it to convert the cart to a confirmed order.

Overpaid state

If the total of registered payments exceeds the cart total, a blue banner appears:

Overpaid: [amount] [currency]

You can still create the order when the cart is overpaid. Handle any change or refund according to your store's procedures.

Creating the order after payment

Once payment is registered, tap Order to convert the cart to a confirmed order. See Checkout with Payment Terminal for a full description of the order creation flow, including pre-checkout checks.
