Adding Items by Scan
Add products to a cart by scanning a barcode with the built-in camera or a hardware barcode scanner.
Scanning a barcode is the fastest way to add products to a cart. The In-Store App supports two scanning methods: a hardware barcode scanner (keyboard wedge), which adds items silently in the background, and a camera scanner (mobile devices only), which opens a confirmation dialog before adding. Both methods create a new cart automatically if no cart is currently active.
Hardware barcode scanner
When a hardware barcode scanner is connected, it is active automatically on the Home and Carts pages. Scanning a product barcode adds the item directly to the active cart without opening any dialog.
- Navigate to the Home or Carts section.
- Scan the product barcode with the hardware scanner.
- A brief Added to cart notification confirms the item was added.
If no cart is currently active, one is created automatically using the device's default store and order type.
When a scan fails
If the scanned code cannot be matched to a product in the system, an error notification is shown at the bottom of the screen. Check the barcode is undamaged and try scanning again, or use the product search to find the item manually.
The hardware scanner accepts both EAN and SKU codes. If the scanned value matches a product SKU, that variant is added directly.
Camera scanner
The camera scanner is available on mobile devices (Android and iOS only). It opens the device camera so you can point it at a barcode, then shows a confirmation dialog before adding the item to the cart.
Opening the camera scanner
The camera icon is available in two places:
From the home page search bar:
- Tap the camera icon (camera) on the right side of the Search products bar on the home screen.
- The Scan Barcode camera scanner opens.
From the product search page:
- Open the product search page (tap the Search products bar and the search page opens).
- Tap the camera icon (camera) in the top-right corner of the page.
- The Scan Barcode camera scanner opens.
The camera scanner is only shown on Android and iOS. It is not available on web or desktop.
Scanning a barcode
Point the camera at the product barcode. A white square viewfinder is centred on the screen as a guide. The scan is detected automatically — the camera closes and the result is processed immediately.
The camera scanner supports: Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, ITF, Codabar, and QR Code.
Use the torch icon (top-right) to toggle the flashlight if the barcode is hard to read in low light.
The scan result dialog
After a successful scan, the Scanned Product dialog appears showing the matched product.
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Product image | 72 × 72 thumbnail |
| Product name | Shown in bold |
| EAN chip | Scanned EAN code |
| SKU chip | Product SKU |
The dialog has two actions:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add to cart | Adds the product to the active cart (or creates a new one) and shows an [Name] added to cart notification |
| Go to product | Closes the dialog and opens the full product detail page |
Tap Add to cart to confirm the item. Tap outside the dialog or use the back gesture to dismiss without adding anything.
When a product is not found
If the scanned code cannot be matched to any product in the system, a No product found for "[code]" notification appears. The camera scanner has already closed at this point. Tap the camera icon again to scan a different barcode, or add the item using the product search.
Scanning products with multiple variants
When a product has multiple size or colour variants and the scanned EAN belongs to a specific variant, the correct variant is identified automatically and added without a selection step. The confirmation dialog (camera scanner) or snackbar (hardware scanner) shows the variant name.
