Adding a Customer to the Sale

Attach a customer profile to the active cart so loyalty, history, and customer-specific pricing apply.

Attaching a customer to a cart enables customer-specific pricing, applicable promotions, customer club benefits, and order history. This page covers searching for an existing customer, registering a new one on the spot, swapping or removing the customer on the cart, and enrolling a private customer into the customer club.

The customer panel lives at the top of the start screen and is always available, whether or not a cart has been started.

Prerequisites

  • Signed in to the In-Store App on a device with a default store and order type configured
  • Your user must have permission to read and create customers in the tenant
  • For customer-club enrolment: the tenant must have a customer club configured

Adding a customer when no cart exists

If you start from a cleared start screen with no active cart, attaching a customer also creates the cart for you in a single step.

  1. On the start screen, tap the Add Customer card (the row with the person-plus icon and the helper text Search and select a customer).
  2. The Find Customer dialog opens. Type a name, email address, or phone number into the search field. Searching starts automatically a moment after you stop typing.
  3. Tap a result to attach that customer. A new cart is created with the device's default store and order type, and a confirmation toast appears: New cart created with customer!

Adding a customer to an existing cart

When a cart is already active, the same Customer Selector card is shown empty above the products grid until a customer is attached.

  1. Tap the Add Customer card.
  2. Search and select the customer as above.
  3. The customer is added to the active cart and a toast confirms: Customer added to cart successfully!

Searching for a customer

The search box accepts free text. The app detects the type of input you enter and uses it across name, email, and phone number fields.

Input you typeDetected as
john smithName
jane@example.comEmail
+47 99 12 34 56Phone number

While you type:

  • A 300 ms debounce avoids querying on every keystroke.
  • Results paginate 20 at a time. Use the chevrons at the bottom to step through pages — the centre shows the current page out of the total (for example 2/5) and the left side shows the total customer count.
  • Tap the × in the search field to clear it and return to the empty state.

Each result card shows the customer's name, a Private or Business badge, and any email or phone on file. If neither contact value is set, the card shows No contact info in italics.

Result actions

On larger devices the actions sit to the right of each result; on smaller devices they appear below the row.

  • View (eye icon) — opens the full customer details page without closing the dialog. Use this when you need to verify it's the right customer before attaching.
  • Select customer (green tick) — attaches the customer to the cart and closes the dialog. Tapping anywhere else on the row also selects the customer.

Registering a new customer

If you cannot find the customer you need, you can create one directly from the search dialog. The values you have already typed are carried across to the create form so you do not have to retype them.

  1. With or without a search query, tap Create New Customer at the bottom of the dialog.
  2. The dialog switches to the Create Customer view.
  3. Choose a customer type at the top: Private or Business.
  4. Fill in the fields. For Private customers the name is split into First Name and Last Name; for Business customers there is a single Company Name field.
  5. Enter Email and/or Phone. At least one of the two is required — the Create Customer button stays disabled until you provide one.
  6. Tap Create Customer. The button shows Creating… while the customer is registered, after which the new customer is selected and added to the cart automatically.

Smart pre-fill from the search box. When you tap Create New Customer, the app inspects what you typed:

  • An email-shaped value goes into the Email field (lower-cased).
  • A phone-shaped value goes into the Phone field.
  • A name goes into First Name / Last Name with proper casing applied. The same value also pre-fills Company Name if you switch to Business.

The phone number — or the email if no phone is entered — is used as the customer's identifier. If a customer with that identifier already exists you will see A customer with this ID already exists. Search for the existing record instead of creating a duplicate.

To go back to searching without creating, tap the back arrow at the top-left of the create view.

Working with the attached customer

Once a customer is attached, the Customer Selector card on the start screen changes to show their details:

  • A person or business icon (depending on customer type)
  • The customer's name, with a small blue card-membership icon if they are a customer-club member
  • Their email and phone (each suppressed if missing)
  • Two action buttons on the right: swap (change customer) and × (remove customer)

Tapping the customer's info area opens the full Customer details page, where you can review order history, manage the customer club membership, and edit profile fields.

Changing the customer on a cart

  1. Tap the swap icon (two horizontal arrows) on the Customer Selector card.
  2. The Find Customer dialog opens — search and select a different customer the same way as before.
  3. The new customer replaces the previous one on the cart.

Removing the customer from a cart

  1. Tap the × icon on the Customer Selector card.
  2. The customer is detached from the cart and a toast confirms: Customer removed from cart.

The cart and its line items remain — only the customer association is removed.

Enrolling a private customer in the customer club

Customer-club enrolment is initiated from the Customer details page rather than from the cart.

  1. Open the customer's details (tap the customer info on the Customer Selector card, or use View in the search dialog).
  2. Tap the Join Customer Club action.
  3. The Join Customer Club dialog appears with three checkboxes:
    • Approve terms and conditions — required, marked with a red asterisk
    • Consent to SMS marketing — optional
    • Consent to email marketing — optional
  4. The blue Enroll button is disabled until terms are approved.
  5. Tap Enroll to register the membership. On success a toast confirms enrolment, and the blue card-membership icon appears next to the customer's name in the cart from then on.

If a customer-facing display is paired and open, the consent dialog is shown on the customer display instead of the cashier's tablet, so the customer can tick the consents themselves. Once they confirm, the result flows back to the cashier's app.

To leave the club, use Remove from Customer Club on the same details page. You'll be asked to confirm before the membership is removed.

Variations

B2B customers

Business customers behave the same way as private customers in the cart, with two visible differences:

  • The icon on the Customer Selector card is a building rather than a person.
  • The customer-club indicator never appears — only private customers can be club members.

Customers without contact info

If a result row shows No contact info, the customer can still be selected and attached to a cart. Their identifier (whatever was originally registered against them) is used as-is.
