Selling a Gift Card
Issue a new gift card from the home screen. Supports both physical pre-printed cards (activated by scanning the code) and digital cards (code generated by the provider on activation).
The Sell Gift Card tile on the home screen lets a cashier issue a new gift card in a few taps. The cashier enters the value, optionally scans a physical card's barcode, and confirms. The gift card is added to the cart as a line item and the sale proceeds normally through checkout. The gift card is activated by the configured provider once the order is confirmed.
The Sell Gift Card tile only appears on the home screen when the feature has been enabled by an administrator. See Configuration if the tile is missing.
Physical cards vs digital cards
| Physical card | Digital card | |
|---|---|---|
| What the cashier does | Scans the barcode on the pre-printed card | Leaves the card code field empty |
| Card code | Pre-printed on the card; scanned at the time of sale | Generated by the provider when the order is processed |
| How the customer receives it | Handed the physical card in store | Code printed on the receipt (or sent by email if configured) (receipt printing for gift cards is not yet implemented) |
| Provider activation | The provider activates the specific card number that was scanned | The provider creates a new card and returns the generated code |
Selling a gift card
Step 1 — Open the Sell Gift Card screen
Tap the Sell Gift Card tile on the home screen. The gift card amount screen opens.
Step 2 — Enter the amount
Use the numpad to enter the value of the gift card. The amount is shown in large type above the keypad as you type.
The amount field does not accept zero. The Confirm button stays disabled until a positive amount has been entered.
Step 3 — Scan the card code (physical cards only)
If you are selling a physical pre-printed gift card, scan the barcode on the card using the device's scanner or camera. The code appears in the Card code field below the numpad.
You can also type the code manually if the scanner cannot read the barcode.
Leave the field empty if you are issuing a digital gift card — the provider will generate the code automatically.
Step 4 — Confirm
Tap Confirm. The gift card is added to the cart as a price-locked line item at the amount you entered.
The cart opens. You will see the gift card as a line item with the configured gift card product name and the entered amount.
Step 5 — Complete checkout
Complete the sale normally:
- Add any other items to the cart if needed, or proceed straight to payment.
- Tap Pay and take payment via the terminal, cash, or any other available method.
- Confirm the order.
Once the order is confirmed and processed, the gift card is activated by the provider. This happens automatically in the background — no additional action is required from the cashier.
Step 6 — Hand over the card or code
| Card type | What to give the customer |
|---|---|
| Physical | Hand the physical card to the customer. The code was already on the card when it was scanned. |
| Digital | The gift card code generated by the provider is printed on the receipt. Tear off the receipt and give it to the customer, or read the code aloud. |
What appears on the receipt
The receipt includes the gift card line item with the purchase amount. For digital cards, the provider-generated code is printed on the receipt so the customer has a record of their code.
Variations and edge cases
The Sell Gift Card tile is not visible
The tile is hidden when:
- Gift card selling is not enabled — an administrator must enable it in tenant settings.
- No gift card SKU is configured — the feature requires a product SKU to be set.
See Configuration.
The Confirm button stays disabled
The button is disabled when no amount has been entered, or when the amount is zero. Enter a positive value using the numpad to enable it.
The physical card code is already in use
If you scan a card that has already been activated, the provider will return an error when the order is processed. The order will be placed on hold and an error note will be added to the order. Contact your gift card provider or system administrator to resolve the conflict.
Cancelling before confirming
Tap the back arrow to exit the sell gift card screen without adding anything to the cart. No changes are made.
Removing the gift card from the cart after confirming
If you added the gift card to the cart by mistake:
- Tap the gift card line in the cart.
- Tap Remove line (or reduce the quantity to zero).
The gift card line is removed. The gift card has not been activated at this point, so no provider action is needed.
Once the order is confirmed and the gift card has been activated by the provider, the gift card cannot be deactivated from the app. Contact your gift card provider directly to cancel an activated card.
